August 19, 2012 STURBRIDGE — Elizabeth Darcy has never given up hope, not even when doctors repeatedly said she didn't have much longer to live.
Things looked particularly bleak for Darcy in 2005 after her pancreatitis surgery, when she and her husband, Joseph, were struggling to make co-payments to several medical facilities. She became so desperate that, even though she often felt weak, she took a job at the McDonald's in Sturbridge for a year to help make ends meet.
"Joe would wake up at 4 a.m. and drive me to work. That's how badly we needed the money," said Darcy, who also struggles with asthma, bronchitis, COPD, and other ailments.
